  1. Christmas in the Country

    January 2, 2011 by Katie

We were able to go back home to my parents for Christmas this year; the first time I’ve been home on Christmas Day in about 5 years. Usually, we go back to Kansas earlier in December or in January when flights are much cheaper and end up staying in Kansas City instead of going back to the farm. But this year was special, so we only spent a day in KC and then relaxed with family for the next 3 days.

It’s always a headache of sorts trying to find time to spend with our numerous friends that live in the KC area, and unfortunately this time we were only able to see just a handful. But we made the most of what time we did get to spend together.  We also weren’t very good at taking pictures this trip, so sadly a lot of people went undocumented. I’ll try to do better in the future, but I was just more concerned with getting quality time in instead of breaking out the camera.

We did get to enjoy a lively brunch with our college friends Shawn & Mindy, Drew & Sallee Gaelle and their cute kiddos.

The Other Harrises drove all the way from Wichita with Wilder & Story

    The Jacks and jolly Jonah

After a few more meetups and a slumber party at my brother Ben and sis-in-law Kim’s, we made the 2 hour drive back to my parents’ farm on Christmas Eve morning. Mom had whipped up an awesome lunch for us kids and it was wonderful to all be home together again.  Just like we did every year growing up, we loaded up the car with mom’s homemade Christmas goodies and drove around for hours delivering happiness to friends and family around town.  I think Todd got a very thorough tour of our small town and the surrounding countryside, whether he wanted to or not. :)

Christmas morning, we were up bright and early enough to open presents as a family (and uncle Kenneth came to join in).

I love seeing everyone’s faces as they open gifts. And fortunately, I have a brother who gets extremely excited over anything to do with airplanes or toys. I think his favorite gifts we gave him were the toy airplane glider and mini potato gun. Next year, we’re just giving him all toys. Sorry Kim.

After presents and lunch, Todd and I bundled up and headed out into the chilly weather for an adventure on the 4-wheeler ‘jitney’ (as my dad calls it).

Rockin’ some pretty awesome outfits. I remember wearing those helmets and my mom wearing those blue coveralls when I was a kiddo. Hey, whatever it takes to (try to) keep warm & safe.

Todd begging ‘let me drive, let me drive, let me drive!’

I was really hoping for some snowmobile fun, but you take what you get.

On Sunday, we had uncles & aunts, cousins and family friends come out for several hours, so that was nice to catch up with everyone. Perhaps a bit overwhelming for Todd, but he should be relieved 90% of my family weren’t able to attend.

As usual, the time together wasn’t long enough and before I knew it, we were saying our goodbyes and heading back to Seattle. It was a very Merry Christmas indeed and we thoroughly enjoyed getting to spend our Christmas in Kansas. Hope you were able to enjoy some precious time with your friends and family this holiday season as well.

  2. The Best

    December 18, 2010 by Katie

Every year at Christmastime, I crack open my cookbook to my most cherished recipe– mom’s Christmas Cookies w/ Buttercream Icing.

There are so many reasons why I love these. When I make them, I feel like I’m back in my mom’s kitchen; the taste and aroma transport me back to childhood. It’s almost as if I’m there again, spending an entire Saturday being her kitchen apprentice.  Plus, the ingredient list is short. Everything you need is pictured (for the cookies, not the icing).

These cookies are not organic or vegan, and definitely not low fat or sugar free, they’re REAL. Made with simple ingredients. Like the way our grandmas used to make food.  But if there’s one thing I firmly believe when it comes to cookies, there is no slacking allowed for 3 of the ingredients.

I don’t care what brands the rest of my ingredients are as long as there’s high quality vanilla (none of that imitation ‘vanilla’ stuff, what is that anyways??), good butter, and cage free eggs. Everything else is the B-team, but these are the stars. They may cost at least twice as much, but I think it’s worth it.

Probably the most important thing I remember my mom teaching me about these is that the thicker they are, the better.  And take them out of the oven when they don’t even look done. Keeps them soft and fluffy.

My friend Becky says that cookies are just vehicles for frosting, but I think mom’s buttercream frosting and these guys can both win awards on their own. Put them together, and it’s a party in your mouth.

I made about 3 dozen of these cookies and they’re pretty much all gone. We had a Secret Santa party last night with our former Share Group and I took a platter and gave goodie bags of cookies to everyone.  I originally planned to make more, but it’s a lot of work and I’m not my mom. (Did I mention she used to make dozens and dozens of these for every single holiday? Valentines, St. Patty’s, Easter……) She’s awesome.  And while my mom was at work on Christmas Eve, dad would load up my brother & I and we’d deliver plates of these cookies to all our neighbors and relatives.  I may have lived in a small town, but trust me, it was a A LOT of deliveries.

This was not an Ugly Christmas Sweater party, but we wore them anyways. ‘Tis the season.

One week until Christmas. Who’s excited?

    These guys are.

  3. We Give Thanks

    December 1, 2010 by Katie

As a result of ‘Snowmygoodness 2010′, neither of us could get to work last Tuesday. What I had intended to be a day of cleaning and food prep for Thanksgiving dinner turned into a day of sledding fun and relaxation instead.

We bundled up and walked over to our friends Ryan & Aubrey’s house since they live about a 10 minute walk away.  After lunch, we all hiked back to our house and scrounged around for any type of sledding device we could find….a large Rubbermaid tote box & lid, old cookie sheet, and a flattened cardboard box.  The car hood almost became a reality until Todd made me promise to let him buy a replacement one afterwards. No thanks.

Ed. note: We’re just trying out this whole video thing, so if it doesn’t work when you click on the images below, try clicking on the link under each one.

Turns out, the Rubbermaid tote box and the cookie sheet were the only ones that worked, uh….decently.

No need to worry about us poor kids, we now have a brand new disc sled to use the next time it snows. Thanks Ryan. :)

    .   .   .   .   .   .   .

And thankfully, we got to enjoy the Thanksgiving weekend with Mom & Dad Harris once they were able to safely make the drive over from Idaho.  My first time cooking a turkey. And making gravy. Both turned out to be a success, thanks in large part to my mom being a quick phone call away whenever I had a question.

Everything minus the pumpkin pie….and proof of my gravy success. I’m not afraid of making it anymore.

Mom & Dad helped us put up the Christmas tree that they gifted to us. No more small, apartment sized tree. This thing is a beast. And pre-lit!

Since we’ll be back in Kansas for Christmas this year, we opened some fun Christmas gifts they’ve acquire through their travels this past year. Behold, Todd’s new favorite toy, The Stig doll. He’s only available for purchase in the UK, but they have friends in Wales who were willing to play elves this year.

Thanks for coming to spend the holiday with us, Mom & Dad, it’s wonderful having you live (somewhat) close by.

  4. Snow my goodness

    November 22, 2010 by Katie

How do you make a whole city shut down?

    Let it snow.

Not even a lot of snow, just a little.

I think we’ve had about an inch or two fall today. Conditions that are laughable to me as a Midwesterner are basically a recipe for disaster in the Seattle area.   I don’t know if it’s the hills, the rarity of snowfall here, or the hypnotizing effect of softly falling snow.  It is a puzzling thing to me how an entire region just goes totally haywire when the frosty flakes start to fall.

I drove to work today.  Gave me some good time to practice my patience.  Average speed on the 14 mile commute home……16 mph.  I’ll consider that a good pace though since many people had several hour long bus rides to endure.  5 hours to go 10 miles in some places.

Don’t get me wrong, I love me some snow.  Snow makes me feel like I’m back home in Kansas.  Except that, out here, it’s more stressful and not good for making snowballs. :(

Hey, at least it’s pretty & peaceful now.

  5. Two Years

    September 13, 2010 by Katie

On this special day, two years ago.

We were blessed to have so many loving family and friends celebrate our wedding day.  It’s not the dress or the flowers, the cheesecake or the dancing that we remember the most.  It’s all the hugs and love we felt all day long.  Those memories will forever be engrained in my heart and in my mind.

Cheers, my sweet love, to many more wonderful years together.
