  1. Untameable

    December 21, 2011 by Katie

    THIS…

    is what happens when you wash her hair before bedtime, and then just let it air dry and do its own thing.

    I don’t have the desire or time to even try to tame that beast today (nor do I think I could actually get it calmed down without fully washing it), so we are just going with the rockstar/stegosaurus look today.

    Besides, to paraphrase her Grandpa S, ‘leave it alone, it’s her trademark’.

    Okay.

    But if this continues until she’s 16, I’m gonna get a second opinion.

  2. Best Friends

    December 19, 2011 by Katie

    Every Wednesday, Elise and I escape from the confines of our house and go to school for a couple hours. Our area technical college runs a Toddler Group/parent education course, so Elise gets to learn fun songs and interact with other babies while I get college credit. Yaaay.

    Plus, it’s wonderful for me to have time with other moms & dads and carry on an adult conversation.

    As much as I love being a stay-at-home mom, the downside is that many days the only conversations I have (other than with Todd) are the ones in which both parties involved don’t even understand what the other is saying.

    We started classes when she was about 2 months old. Being one of the youngest, she wasn’t quite sure what to think about all the songs, activities, and older kids, so she got overstimulated very easily. I’d usually spend the second half of class listening to the teacher while I walked around with Elise, trying to keep her calm.

    But now, she loves seeing the other kids and learning new songs with me.

    In fact, this is where she also met her very first best friend—whom we’ll just call, ‘little N’. They were born 5 days apart, so they’re at the same developmental stage. While the other kids crawl or run around, these two girlies lay beside each other and ‘talk’.

    {and apparently sometimes Elise’s jabbering puts her friend to sleep. :) }

  4. Success

    December 14, 2011 by Katie

    Since I don’t have any pictures of our early family Christmas—yes, I’m still sad about the whole thing—here are some pictures from when grandpa & grandma came to visit last month.

    Do you know how difficult it is to get Elise and my parents to both look & smile at the camera?!

    Very.

    And usually Elise is the one who is better at it. :)

    {she’s thinking: who’s that crazy lady?}

    .    .    .    .    .

    Ah, and remember when I challenged myself to take a picture of just Todd & I when we were out with friends?

    {success.}

    That was like an entire month ago! We got a babysitter and enjoyed an evening out at Black Raven, our local microbrewery. Todd and the guys go there frequently (or they used to before Elise was born), but this was my first time there. Naturally, they suggested I order a sampler.

    {this momma needs to get out more.}

  5. Christmas on Hold

    December 12, 2011 by Katie

    We should’ve spent this past weekend back in Kansas City, celebrating an early Christmas with my family. Instead, we spent it snuggled up at home doing much less cool things like coughing, sneezing, aching, and getting insufficient sleep.

    Ah, the joys of having a sick baby.

    Poor thing had a temperature as high as 101.4, so we cancelled our flights and booked the first available appointment with our pediatrician. We were reassured it is just a virus, and while we’re thankful that it’s nothing worse, it sure isn’t fun dealing with a sick baby when both mom & dad eventually get sick too.

    Boo hiss.

    On the plus side—if you want to call it that—we’re pretty good at taking her rectal temperature now, which I feel gives us the right to put a gold star next to our ‘becoming a legit parent’ chart.

    Just kidding. I don’t really have a chart like that.

    I keep a checklist in my head.

    And, in case you’re about to suggest that we go get one of those wonderful fancy dancy head scanning thermometers that work much more quickly and painlessly for all involved—we have one and we used it too. But as a concerned first time mom with a baby whose fever was escalating, I just wanted the most accurate reading possible and that’s what the rectal one was good for.

    Now, time for me to take off my sad face and put on my happy face.

    Elise (and Guster the cat) helped us put up our Christmas tree recently.

    I think that having cats has helped prep us for next year when we’ll have a mobile child <—-ohmygosh, I don’t want to think about that yet. The cats automatically assume that any dangly thing is their toy, so we already keep the bottom of the tree sparsely decorated with non-breakable ornaments. I’m pretty sure that only the top half of our tree will be decorated next year.

    {wild cat.}

    {Wildcat.}

    {it’s amazing how much things change in a year.}

    All I want for Christmas is to have my happy, healthy baby back.
