  1. Seafair Run

    August 3, 2009 by Katie

This year is Seafair’s 60th anniversary, and when they announced a special $5 registration fee for the Seafair 5K run, I rounded up some friends to join in on the fun. For that price, you can be a non-runner and still sign up and not feel bad about it.

So last weekend, Todd and I ran (and finished!) our first 5K together. It also may be our last one together, as we have VERY different running styles. I am a ‘hit your pace and stay in the groove’ girl while he is a ‘sprint! walk. sprint! walk. sprint! walk. sprint!….’guy. (i felt like I was back in high school track, running fartleks for 3 miles…remember those days, Bluejays??)

Despite our pace differences, we stayed together and enjoyed the muggy evening run side by side. I’m so proud of all our friends for doing so well, and especially Todd for finishing his 1st 5K! Afterwards we all went out to Pazzo for pizzas and beer. This is definitely an event we’re planning on making an annual group activity.

And…..I always like to get a post-race ‘orange in the mouth’ picture. We’re fun people.

  2. The Pinnacle of Summer

    August 2, 2009 by Katie

Every year, Seattle holds a month long summer celebration called Seafair.  Events include a milk carton derby, hydroplanes races, Fleet Week, Torchlight parade, a Torchlight run and my absolute favorite favorite part of it all—the Blue Angels!

From Thursday thru Sunday, you can see and hear the Blue Angels practicing and performing over Seattle.  Their main show is held on Saturday & Sunday over Lake Washington, but you can hear their jet engines booming wherever you are in the city.  I love it.

Growing up in a family of pilots, we went to air shows every summer, and I’m so glad that living in Seattle allows me to continue that tradition.  Todd was in Canada this weekend for some car races, so I guess I’m carrying on the family tradition by myself.  I didn’t mind though, I had plenty of other Blue Angel fans to celebrate with.

Last year I watched from a hill overlooking the lake, but this year, I wanted as close to the action as I could get, so I lined up with thousands of others to get on the I-90 bridge.

(you’d think I would have taken better pictures, but I had to use my iphone camera since I so graciously allowed Todd to take our good camera to Canada and take pictures of cars)

    patiently waiting

They close the freeway for two hours so spectators can walk out onto the bridge (I’m sure it also is somewhat of a safety hazard to have cars driving underneath an airshow)

    here they come!

Here come the Blue Angels! These pictures don’t even do this airshow justice.  The jets fly incredibly close, it’s so loud and you can practically see the pilots faces. Their precision skills just amaze me, I get excitement goosebumps everytime—and for one weekend every summer, I want to be a fighter pilot.

Thousands of boats gather on the lake to get an even better experience. Someday maybe I’ll watch from there….someday.

I love this tradition. See you next year!
