  1. God Bless the U.S.A.

    July 5, 2009 by Katie

Hope everyone had a relaxing and safe 4th of July and remembered to give thanks for our freedom and for all those who have fought for or are currently serving our country.

Every year, I wake up and reminisce of my childhood and spending all weekend camping out at the Sabetha Lake with family and friends.

Water skiing, grilling, rainy nights in tents, shooting off fireworks.  My brother and his friends spending their hard-earned money on ridiculously enormous amounts of bottle rockets and blackjacks––once setting my brand new life jacket on fire–-ah, so  many fond memories.

Seems like this holiday has calmed down a lot for me.  Maybe it’s because of an aversion to the massive crowds in Seattle or maybe it’s because I don’t own a boat.

Either way, we spent the day with a walk to Pike Place Market (but got out fast due to all the people), had a late lunch at our favorite sushi place (if that’s not a good ol’ American tradition, I don’t know what is!), and relaxed at home until our friends Jason & Shauna came over and we walked down to Lake Union for the fireworks.

Starting around 10 a.m. boats, boats, and more boats converge upon Lake Union to get a spot for the evening’s fireworks extravaganza.

    lots of boats

And this is what becomes of my beloved GasWorks Park.  Several thousand people arrive early to stake out their spots for front row seats as the fireworks are shot off from the barge.  [It should come as no surprise that we were not one of those people.]

Instead, we walked down to the south end of the lake and found a bench along the water.

    Boom.

And then we all walked back home and had popsicles.  Not the eventful holiday I grew up with, but a nice, relaxing replacement until I somehow figure out how to get myself a boat….
