  1. Birthday Girl

    June 9, 2009 by Katie

Not feeling any older and certainly no wiser, I turned the big 27 this past Sunday.  To celebrate, I had planned myself a fun little, low key birthday party.  Surrounded by some of our closest Seattle friends, we set sail on the Fremont Sunday Ice Cream Cruise around Lake Union.

I’m working on putting together a video of all the 450 pictures from the day, so once I get that done, I’ll post it on our blog.  But for now, here’s a little look at my special day:

After our boat docked, we all headed to the roof deck at our apartment for snacks and a wonderful chorus of ‘Happy Birthday’.

    serenading

    singing

    Happy Birthday to ME!

    happy birthday to ME!

I’ve been told that my mom went into labor with me while picking strawberries and when I was born, my aunt Janice made my birth announcements shaped like strawberries which read “It’s Strawberry Season….and We Picked a Sweet One!”

So began my love of strawberries, it’s only fitting that they make a special appearance.

I couldn’t have asked for anything better (well, except to be able to spend my birthday with ALL my family and friends)!

Stay tuned for my fun video.

  2. Putt Putt Fun Fun

    June 6, 2009 by Katie

Wednesdays are one of my favorite days of the week because that’s when we meet with 9 of our friends for Share Group. Normally we have a bible study, share what’s going on in our lives and talk about our praises & problems. They’re a fabulous, awesome group of young adults and I couldn’t ask for a better ‘support group’ of sorts.

But every once in a while, we need to take a break and entertain ourselves with a fun night out. So this week, it was putt putt golf–a game of intense skills that none of us really have.  Unfortunately, 4 people weren’t able to attend due to sickness, travel, and ‘dislike of the sun’–whatever that is :) .  Anyways

If there’s something we’ve all learned in share group, it’s that life is not always easy–

  3. Feeling Homesick

    June 2, 2009 by Katie

As much as I love Seattle, lately everywhere I go my mind says…’awww, home…i miss home’.

You know you’re feeling homesick when everything around you reminds you of home.  Not home here, but HOME in Kansas.  The place that made me who I am. The small town, the farm, the quietness of it all.

Everything makes me long for home.

The smell of BBQ, the sound of airplanes, the boats on the lake, the flowers, the heat, the fresh produce, the sleeping with the windows open at night (although we have no other option here since A/C is mostly considered a luxury in Seattle).

It’s been about 9 months since we’ve been home to Kansas and even then it was such a whirlwind with the wedding.  I think it’s always the summer weather that makes me long for some quality time in my hometown.

I see a flower and think of my grandmas, especially the irises, peonies and cannas.

Just down the block from our apartment is a neighborhood garden and everytime I walk by, I just want to forage the goods and eat them with my grubby hands  (it’s strictly enforced that this is not an acceptable action, which i completely understand).

Every single produce item I see makes me yearn for fresh food from my dad & mom’s gardens.  Yes, gardens, plural.  I find it cute that they have separate gardens to grow their own veggies, fruits and flowers.

I see a patch of clover along the lake, so I pick a couple stems and eat the sweet flowers.  I see classic Mustangs and just want to put the gas pedal down.  I see boats on the lake and I want to jump in and go water skiing.  Mom, I even saw a ‘yellow flower’ weed while I was out on a run, so I pulled it so the seeds wouldn’t blow your way :)

Thankfully, we are making our way back home to Kansas in less than TWO WEEKS!  Just when I need it the most.  Alot of our time will be spent in Kansas City, which is nice so we can catch up with lots of friends who live there (best of all, spend some quality time at the brother and sis’s) and see two of our good friends get married.

Unfortunately, Todd will have to get back to Seattle for work, but I extended my trip so I could spend 2 days on the farm with Dad & Mom.  Not as long as I would like, but I’m very excited to make the most of it.

I have started compiling a to-do list which includes:

-go for an airplane ride with dad and convince him to let me fly

-take the Mustang convertible out for an evening ice cream treat

-lay out on the roof and look at the stars

-bale some hay  (not sure if the timing will be right, but i REALLY hope it is. although as long as i can take a tractor out for a drive, i’ll be happy.)

-go for an early morning run before the humidity kills me

-make a strawberry rhubarb pie with mom

-see as many friends and family as possible

You know, silly things that you take for granted when you ‘have’ to do them, but things that mean so much once you don’t have the convenience of doing them anymore.

    I miss Kansas.
