For most people, owning a convertible in a city where we only get 58 clear days a year doesn’t make a whole lot of sense. And I’d probably agree with you; if my car came in a standard hard top I’d have probably gotten it instead — assuming it was cheaper, of course.
But living in Seattle, you learn to appreciate the days that it doesn’t rain, especially during the winter months. In January, most places at our latitude are lucky to not be freezing. We’re blessed, though, due to being so close to the coast and having the ocean warm us up; most days in the winter have us with lows in the mid 30s and highs in the upper 40s. And today was no different than normal; it was about 40 degrees this morning. The days that I drive, I appreciate these “wonderful” days even more. So when I walked out to my car this morning and noticed that I could actually see a little blue above me, I decided that I would drive to work with the top down.
Sure, sitting in traffic this morning — which happened to be especially brutal today, taking me about an hour to travel the 10 miles to work — I might have looked a little crazy. All the other convertibles that I passed had their tops up. But not me. It was wonderful. Okay, I’ll confess that I was just a *bit* cold once I got going above 5 mph. And the blue sky went back to a solid gray canopy. But none of that mattered. I got to enjoy the open air that a convertible provides.
I’d end this saying something like “When life gives you lemons, make lemonade” or something else equally cliché, but I think the important thing is just to find ways to enjoy your day. Sitting in traffic for the better part of an hour is completely optional. (But it can be fun.)
